Chef Natalie Wilkinsen, Bistro Molokini, Grand Wailea shows off the selection of Shaved Ice with Pineapple Basil Sorbet topped with Mojito – Lava Flow – Mai Tai syrups
Taste of Wailea 2011, Maui Film Festival
The Taste of Wailea was the Who’s Who of Wailea fine dining in this sell out signature event at the Maui Film Festival. The participating restaurants included Ruth Chris, Mala Ocean Tavern, Monkeypod (@petermerriman), Matteo’s, Gannon’s (@bevgannonmaui), Joe’s, Bistro Molokini (@grandwailea), Four Seasons (@FSMaui), Pita Paradise Wailea, Capische?, Spago (@FSMaui), Mulligan’s on the Blue, and Ko (@fairmontkealani). The menu was incredible–seafood, lamb, beef, pork, pasta, salad, Greek, asian, Italian, American and desserts, if its delicious it was here. (to see the menu check this earlier post) These tasting dishes were artfully plated, hearty, refined, and plentiful. I tried to get to every booth but it simply wasn’t possible.

The fine beverage spread somehow kept up, too. The wine table by Southern Wine and Spirits, the Ocean Vodka tent and the Stella Artois tent were serving extraordinary pairings to the tasty dishes. Ocean’s Vodka was particularly exhilarating with Watermelon Martinis with fresh watermelon, and the Lemon Blossom that featured fresh lavender. Bistro Molokini made an adult shave ice in mojito , mai tai and lava flow that were fresh, imaginative and just perfect to stave off the South Maui heat.

Stella Artois was a welcome sight, I thought their glassware was a nice touch

Chef Cameron Lewark of Spagos Roasted a Whole Pig

I really liked the basting wand, various herbs tied to a broomstick dipped in butter
Right in front of the Spago’s station Chef Cameron Lewark Roasted a whole pig. It smelled fantastic. They were roasting it for the film after party to be held at Spago later that evening. Spago’s also served a pineapple kim chee spicy roasted pork sandwich on a bao bun, but I loved their Ahi tuna sashimi with radish salad and soy-shallot dressing best, the radish brightened the fish and added a nice crunch.

I was amazed by the hard working crews that put on this elegant event, it seemed to flow without a hitch. From the Maui Film Festival team, to the restaurants, to the shuttles, the the beverage purveyors. A big mahalo to Dania Katz, (@daniaedibleshi) Edibles Hawaiian Islands, for putting together the Social Media team that tasted and twittered and blogged throughout the event, and including me in the group.
